FHA Home Improvement Grants-Free Housing Preservation Grants

FHA Home Improvement Grants-Free Housing Preservation Grants

There are programs that provide home improvement grants for FHA-insured home and housing units. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA), an organization that works with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), insures over 34 million single and multi-family homes in the United States. These grants can be used to pay the costs of home improvements, renovations and repairs.
Housing Preservation Grants
The Housing Preservation Grant program is funded by the Department of Agriculture and provides grants for home improvements and repairs to eligible applicants in communities of less than 20,000 residents. These grants are open to homeowners, landlords and tenants, and to rental property owners and co-op managers whose housing units are occupied by low income residents.
Sponsors for these grants include state and local government agencies as well as nonprofit organizations. Grants must be used within a two-year period by the recipients.

HOPE VI Program
The Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsors the HOPE VI Program that provides grants to Public Housing Authorities (PHA) to make improvements to housing projects that are occupied by low income families.
Grants can be used to demolish old housing projects and improve existing ones in the PHA's effort to improve the living environment of the residents and build sustainable communities. Applicant eligibility is open only to PHA's.

Neighborhood Stabilization Program
The Neighborhood Stabilization Program provides grants to areas that have been hit by abandoned and foreclosed homes. Grants from this program can be used to demolish blighted structures and to rebuild, renovate and improve homes, housing units and other residential property and structures.
Land banks are also established by grant funds. Cities and counties with over 50,000 and 200,000 residents, respectively, are eligible to receive grant funds. Twenty-five percent of the grant must be used to rehabilitate homes and housing units that will be occupied by low income residents.
